Mayor Signs Domestic Workers Bill
Wednesday was an historic day for domestic workers! Mayor de Blasio signed my bill into law and now housecleaners, nannies and other domestic workers have the same protections under the city’s Human Right Law that are afforded to all other workers.
I joined the city Human Rights Commissioner Carmelyn Malalis and a large contingent of advocates for domestic workers’ rights on the steps of the Staten Island Borough Hall to witness and celebrate this historic event.
New York City has one of the most expansive human rights laws in the country. And yet, I learned during my first term as a City Councilmember that a loophole in the law excluded protections for thousands of housekeepers, nannies and the aides who provide care and companionship to our elderly residents.
We have now closed that loophole.
It’s now illegal to discriminate against or abuse domestic workers. Thank you, Mr. Mayor! And thank you to everyone who worked so tirelessly to make this day happen!
