Help me #SaveTPS

May 12, 2017

On May 21 of this year, more than 5,000 people in this country are in danger of being plucked from their communities and sent to war-torn, Ebola-ravaged countries -- and they need our help.

Temporary Protected Status for people from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone is scheduled to end, and I introduced an emergency resolution Wednesday, May 10, calling on the Homeland Security Secretary to re-authorize and extend Temporary Protected Status for these countries.

I thank the many friends and advocates who joined us to testify at the Committee Hearing. (You can watch a video of the hearing here.)

These countries are suffering from a rise in non-Ebola illnesses and deaths. Their infrastructures were decimated, and extreme health, economic, and societal conditions will continue to exist for years.

If no action is taken, thousands will be sent to countries with no jobs, no infrastructure, no health care facilities. Either that, or they will be relegated to the shadows here, unable to provide for their families.

Today's resolution unanimously passed the City Council this afternoon, and it will be accompanied by a letter to the Secretary of Homeland Security calling on him to extend and reauthorize TPS.

Join me in calling on this administration to #SaveTPS!

Sample Phone Call Script:

I am calling to ask that ________ write to Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly in support of the reauthorization of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for persons from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone living in the United States due to the Ebola crisis of 2014-2016. On May 21st, 2017, the current TPS designation for these countries will expire, putting the persons from these countries living here in danger of losing jobs and benefits such as critical health care.
This is needed because Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone are still recovering and rebuilding from the Ebola crisis and their infrastructures, economies, and health care systems were substantially damaged by the crisis. While the affected countries made great strides to eradicate Ebola, extreme health, economic, and societal conditions will continue to exist for years.

Your constituents are being impacted by the impending expiration of TPS status and they need your support NOW.
