Castleton Avenue businesses launch new merchants group

Castleton Avenue Merchants Organization will boost vibrant West Brighton corridor with new marketing initiatives and infrastructure improvements

April 24, 2019 – More than two dozen Castleton Avenue small businesses have launched a Castleton Avenue Merchants Organization (CAMO), a cooperative effort among small-business owners, Councilwoman Debi Rose, NYC Small Business Services and the Staten Island Business Outreach Center. CAMO merchants will kick off their official formation with a “Move Your Body Meet Your Neighbors” Weekend Walk Street Festival Saturday, April 27, noon to 5 pm on Castleton Avenue from Oakland to Davis avenues.

CAMO’s mission is to create a more vibrant and viable commercial corridor along Castleton Avenue, between Bard and Bement avenues. Working in partnership with local and city agencies, CAMO aims to have a positive impact along the corridor by improving quality programming through arts, food, entertainment and neighborhood improvement initiatives. Following their initial meetings, the merchants have already worked with Councilwoman Rose’s office and the city departments of Sanitation and Transportation to add new bicycle racks, repaint crosswalks and place additional wastebaskets along the corridor.

“Our small businesses are a true asset to our borough, and we know that when they work together in an organized fashion, they create a synergy that helps each one of them thrive while also uplifting the neighborhood as a whole,” said Councilwoman Debi Rose. “I’m pleased to be working with Castleton Avenue merchants to boost the profile of this vibrant corridor. “

“The Staten Island Business Outreach Center is happy to support the Castleton Avenue Merchants Organization as they embark on creating a vibrant, inviting commercial corridor,” said, Loretta Cauldwell, Executive Director of SIBOC.

"Our little corridor of Castleton Avenue has a unique mix of small businesses that provide great value to the local community,” said Tariq Zaid, owner of Richmond Hood Co. “It is nice to work alongside merchants who wish to maintain and increase that value. The support of Councilwoman Rose and SIBOC has been an integral part of our group forming the Castleton Avenue Merchants Organization. I look forward to the future and meeting people who take full advantage of our cool and colorful corridor on Castleton Ave.”

"We feel so blessed to be part of the Castleton Avenue Merchants Organization,” said Nancy Nix of Wicked Stitches. “Our fellow business owners are committed to work together for a common good, to build relationships with each other and the community! We are all motivated to make Castleton Ave a top destination for North Shore shoppers. We are looking forward to our spring event ‘Move your body and meet your neighbors.’ Come out to see us on April 27!”

“If you love your neighborhood your neighborhood will love you,” said Frank Senter of Anthony's Barbershop.

“CAMO brings together business owners along Castleton Avenue’s diverse cultural business corridor,” said Robert Kelly, proprietor of Nurnberger Bierhaus and Nurnberger Bierhalle. “Our new association will help to enable all people to enjoy our eateries, stores and professional entities without discrimination. We look forward to building a bright future for all businesses.”

"It is an exciting time for Castleton Avenue,” said Sasha Small of Relax Be Healthy. “We hope that this will be the beginning of a beautiful relationship with the members as well as the community.”

Saturday’s Weekend Walk will include a community participant mural, Skelzie, hop scotch, life size chess and Jenga, Maker Park Radio, live art, puppy/rabbit adoption pen, magician, balloon sculptor, caricature, roller skating demo/yoga flow, skateboard demo/face painting, hair braiding & candle making workshop, dance party and more. The event is sponsored by the Office of Council Member Rose, the Staten Island Business Outreach Center, the Castleton Avenue Merchants Organization, NYC Department of Transportation and local merchants.
