Councilwoman Debi Rose Launches Essay Contest for Community Board Appointment
To boost youth participation in civic life, Councilwoman Debi Rose is launching an "Uprising Teen Essay Contest,” calling North Shore high school students to write an essay on youth participation on the Community Board. The winner of the contest will receive a personal nomination from Councilwoman Debi Rose for a 2-year appointment to the youth seat on Community Board 1.
“Many of your local leaders, myself included, have served on their local community boards, helping to shape and improve their neighborhoods," said Councilwoman Debi Rose. "Are you a trendsetter, a leader or an innovator? Then I want you to join the ranks of other community leaders and compete for an appointment to Community Board 1.”
The Community Board 1 appointment will begin September 2018. Requirements are as follows:
Must be a high school student at least 16 and no older than 18 at the beginning of the appointment
Must have a minimum average of 80 or 3.0 GPA
Should have community service/ volunteer experience
Must live in Community Board 1
All submissions must include the following:
High school transcripts
A typewritten resume (12 point font) detailing education, work experience (if applicable), achievements, extra-curricular activities, and community service/involvement.
A typewritten 1-page 500-word essay (12 point font) on the following topic: Why you want to serve on local Community Board 1 and how you will influence change to your community from a youth perspective.
