New Lane Shores tenants regain access to community space

In response to a recent policy that shut tenants of New Lane Shores out of their community room during evening and weekend hours, Councilwoman Debi Rose has worked with the tenants association and the New York City Housing Authority to resolve the issue. As of this week, tenants now have access to the room during weekend and evening hours.

“I was pleased that continued advocacy by my office and the responsiveness of NYCHA staff to our calls and conversations resulted in a plan to re-open the room contingent upon an agreement with the Tenant Association to oversee the security of the room,” Councilwoman Rose wrote in a June 26 letter to NYCHA Chair Shola Olatoye. The letter came after a June meeting attended by NYCHA, the tenants association, Community Agency for Senior Citizens and Councilwoman Rose’s office to work out a solution.

An agreement between NYCHA and the tenants association allows tenants to resume use of their community room during extended hours.

“The community room at New Lane Shores is an extension of these residents’ homes, and they deserve access to it during evening and weekend hours,” Councilwoman Rose said. “After multiple discussions with NYCHA officials and the tenants association, I am pleased to have reached a resolution that allowing tenants to resume their popular game nights, movie nights and other events that they have enjoyed in this space for years.”
