Thank you to all who joined my Community Fair at Tappen Park!
Thank you to all who joined me Oct. 24 for my annual Community Fair at Historic Tappen Park! I hope everyone had a lot of fun and enjoyed the food, music and entertainment! A special thank you to our performers: St. Philip's Heat, Susan Wagner Marching Band, Pink Diamond Steppers and CypherArts—you were all amazing! Thank you to the NYPD for bringing the rock wall, which was such a hit with the kids, as were the animals from the Staten Island Zoo. We also celebrated National Food Day, with the SI Hunger Task Force helping us join the nationwide Big Apple Crunch and serving samples from its My Plate Challenge winners. We collaborated with the Fire Department for its Get Alarmed event. The Parks Department hosted games for children, dozens of government and nonprofit agencies gave out information and giveaways at tables, and a line of vans provided flu shots, health screenings, legal advice and even the opportunity for children to make something in Staten Island Makerspace's STEAM Wagon. In other words, we had something for everyone at the fair!
October is domestic violence awareness month, and I was also proud to honor at my Community Fair Department of Sanitation workers Tony Libasci (pictured here with his family), Ronnie Johnson and Ernie Aldez, who helped a victim of domestic violence who was being pursued by her boyfriend. These men are prime examples of what it means to be an upstander, rather than a bystander.
